ThinkVisibility - Write for your readers

I’ve been extremely busy over the past few months looking for my next challenge. This in the midst of the current downturn - it’s been ‘interesting’ to say the least! As a consequence I have somewhat neglected this blog. It’s always been at the back of my mind though. Now I’ve secured myself a new contract I intend to start adding useful posts and articles a little more frequently.

Yesterday’s ThinkVisibility conference in Leeds provides the perfect opportunity to jump back into posting again. Almost all the talks I attended ended up reinforcing the message to be covered here.

The Elements of Style

How much time, effort and cash have you invested in the platform your information sits on and the software used to serve it up? The true cost can run to many thousands of pounds, dollars or Euros - whatever your currency, it can take a lot of investment to get it right. On the other end of the scale, in these days of open-source software, it’s possible to put an extensive site together using freely-available technology, the investment in this case being limited to time (which is also expensive in its own way).

However much time, effort and/or money it’s taken to get your site off the ground, you can be as learned around your content-area as it’s possible to be, but if you aren’t able to present your ideas in a simple and structured manner, so that your information is easily absorbed by your reader, your efforts are devalued.

Expanding on lessons learned from pricing tables

Historically, HTML tables have been used to lay out content visually. This strategy can cause accessibility issues however, these days there isn’t any reason to be using tables other than for tabular data (i.e. structured information that differs across particular categories).
